King & Spalding advised JERA in connection with its investment in a low-carbon ammonia production project to be constructed at the Blue Point Complex in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, USA, in partnership with CF Industries Holdings, Inc. and Mitsui & Co. Ltd.
The project would be the world’s largest low-carbon ammonia production facility with an annual nameplate capacity of approximately 1.4 million tons.
The facility will produce ammonia using natural gas as feedstock, with carbon capture (CCS) technology implemented to capture, transport, and store the carbon dioxide (CO2) generated during production. The total project cost is approximately $4 billion, of which JERA will invest 35%. JERA will offtake a portion of the produced ammonia with production scheduled to begin in 2029.
