A mechanical engineer with in-the-field energy industry experience, Kevin helps companies of every scale develop, protect, and monetize their intellectual property rights.  From patent portfolio strategy and development, to counseling companies across a range of complex commercial and technology-based transactions, Kevin works collaboratively with clients to develop a successful framework for identifying intellectual property and maximizing its value to meet business needs.

With a strong business background and industry-tailored approach, Kevin provides specific insights that help leverage intellectual property assets. Kevin draws on his experience as a project engineer in the energy industry to provide a business perspective and industry insight to IP asset development and transactional legal challenges.  As a mechanical engineer by training, and with practical legal experience in computer science and chemical engineering arts, Kevin has a deep understanding of the technologies that underpin client’s commercial strategies.  Drawing on this well of technical experience, Kevin provides clients with strategies keyed to relevant business objectives.

Kevin’s patent preparation and prosecution experience is extensive.  Kevin has led clients through the entire patenting process, including through drafting targeted utility and design applications, drafting office action responses, conducting examiner interviews, conducting post-allowance reviews and performing patent landscape searches including patentability assessments.  Kevin understands the value of international patent protection, and has successfully protected his client’s IP in China, Japan, European Union, Canada, Australia, Mexico, India, South Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia.  Kevin’s portfolio management experience includes developing complementary domestic and international patent strategies adapted to accelerate prosecution and proactively enhance asset validity.  

Kevin counsels clients on intellectual property risks associated with product commercialization and transactional agreements.  Working with in-house teams to understand product scope, Kevin develops freedom-to-operate opinions and non-infringement opinions.  In addition, Kevin handles transactions involving the creation, use, licensing and transfer of technology and IP, and works closely with litigation counsel to provide early stage enforcement of IP rights.
