Nema Milaninia is a partner on the Special Matters & Government Investigations team in King & Spalding’s Washington, D.C. office. His practice focuses on regulatory compliance and litigation, cross-border investigations, white-collar defense, and public international law litigation. Nema brings nearly two decades of experience spanning public service and the private sector.  His career has been defined by navigating complex global legal landscapes and delivering impactful results for his clients.

Nema specializes in providing regulatory compliance advice and defending clients across a wide range of industries, particularly in emerging technologies. He helps clients develop robust compliance frameworks and navigate complex regulations in the U.S. and internationally. His deep understanding of emerging regulatory trends, especially in AI, content moderation, and data privacy, enables him to proactively guide clients in anticipating and responding to regulatory shifts that could significantly impact their business, and in defending against investigations when they arise.

Prior to joining King & Spalding, Nema served as a senior advisor to the Biden-Harris administration, where he shaped policy on critical issues, including cyber and AI, international humanitarian and criminal law matters and conflict prevention. His strategic insights and leadership in these areas earned him recognition as a thought leader in international investigations and the intersection of emerging technologies, including AI, and regulatory policy.

Nema also held a senior role at Alphabet, Inc. where he worked extensively on high-stakes investigations and litigation involving the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Trade Commission, the European Union and other domestic and international regulatory agencies. He also spearheaded innovative compliance and risk management solutions.  His work at the nexus of technology and governance reinforced his reputation as a trusted advisor capable of addressing the most sophisticated regulatory and operational challenges.

Earlier in his career, Nema was one of the select U.S. nationals to serve as a prosecutor with the International Criminal Court and International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. There, he investigated, prosecuted, and defended appeals in a wide range of cases concerning war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity against senior military and political leaders. His work resulted in the successful arrest and/or partial or complete convictions in all cases handled.

Nema earned his J.D. from University of California College of the Law, San Francisco and a master’s degree in law from the University of Oxford.  He is also a former fellow of the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University.
