José Mario Valdés is Counsel in our Business Litigation Practice Group and a member of our Global Construction and Engineering Disputes team. He represents clients in complex construction disputes involving domestic and international mega projects in both U.S. state and federal courts, as well as in international arbitration proceedings. His practice focuses on engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts in the energy sector.

José Mario has experience with a wide variety of construction claims for projects of renewable and traditional energy sources, including delay damages, disruption, loss of productivity, engineering and design defects, defective workmanship, differing site conditions, acceleration, force majeure, and warranty breaches.

Beyond his experience in construction disputes, José Mario has broad experience in commercial disputes. He has prosecuted and defended against frequent commercial claims, including breach of contract, fraud, and other business torts. He is also proficient in theories of derivative liability such as alter ego, de facto merger, veil piercing, and agency.

Before joining King & Spalding, José Mario was an associate in the Complex Litigation and International Arbitration practice groups at a leading global law firm. He also served as a law clerk in the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico. Earlier in his career, he was an associate in the litigation department of an AmLaw 50 firm, where he handled commercial disputes and regulatory matters before the SEC and DOJ involving bribery of public officials. In addition, he completed an externship at a global reinsurer, providing him with valuable industry perspective in his practice.
