King & Spalding Welcomes Data, Privacy and Security Partner Charles-Albert (Charly) Helleputte in Brussels

BRUSSELS, April 7, 2025 – King & Spalding announced today that Charles-Albert (Charly) Helleputte has joined the firm’s Data, Privacy and Security team and its Government Matters and Regulation practice group as a partner. He is based in the firm’s Brussels office.

Helleputte’s practice covers a broad range of EU regulatory work in data privacy, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI) and other digital technologies. He provides practical and pragmatic advice to clients faced with increased accountability requirements towards users, including in the AI space.  He also helps organizations testing new responses, such as broader use of standards or certification mechanisms across the data life cycle in a wide range of industries both regulated and not regulated. Helleputte has advised on multiple EU and national privacy, cybersecurity and data issues, including GDPR, the NIS1 and NIS2 Directives, the EU AI Act, the eIDAS, etc. He also has experience representing clients before national and EU supervisory authorities and courts, including the Working Party No. 29 (now the European Data Protection Board or EDPB).

“Charly’s abilities to pragmatically address EU-wide data and digital matters provide additional strength to our international data, privacy and security offering and further solidifies our capabilities for managing cross-border privacy and cybersecurity incidents involving multiple regulatory and enforcement landscapes,” said Phyllis Sumner, leader of King & Spalding’s Data, Privacy and Security team. “Charly’s experience advising clients on AI-driven transactions and data privacy issues aligns well with our firm’s growing focus on technology and innovation, and his ability to navigate evolving regulatory frameworks around AI, coupled with his forward-looking approach, will strengthen and expand our technology-related practice areas.”

Helleputte joins King & Spalding from Squire Patton Boggs, where he was a partner, head of the EU practice and co-chair of the global Data Privacy, Cybersecurity and Digital Assets team. He earned his M.A., cum laude, from the Solvay Business School, his J.D., Licence en Droit, cum laude, from the Université catholique de Louvain (Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium) and his B.A. in Law from the Université Saint Louis (Brussels).

“King & Spalding has an impressive reputation, growing data privacy and technology practices, and a strong platform on which I will be able to expand how I help clients navigate the rapidly evolving developments in this area,” said Helleputte. “I am looking forward to collaborating with my new partners across practices and borders to contribute to the continuing expansion of the firm’s data, privacy and security work.”

Helleputte is the third partner to join the firm’s Brussels office in 2025. Arnoud Willems and Bregt Natens, both international trade partners, joined in Brussels in February.
